Rosie's fraction checkpoint portfolio post

In James's group for maths we have been working on a fraction check point. I have got mine all done. It had ratio questions and lots of other fraction based questions. Here is a photo of my fraction checkpoint...

I found most of these questions easy enough to not need help but I was especially challenged on the " solve problems with fractions by... Expressing division answers and remainders as mixed numbers and fractions.

Weather science

Today we worked with troy for science. We are focused on weather. We had to choose an experiment to do with weather of the website " weather wiz kids ". Maria and I choose a soda bottle volcano.
I think this is going to be fun to make and quite easy too because all we need is mentos and diet coke. I think the only hard part will be getting all the mentos in at the same time.

Today for handwriting I did the same poem that we did for the handwriting test. I think I will only need a couple more practices because I have ledgeble writing, I am completely fast and I am nearly completely accurate. Here is a photo
This was easy because I was mostly focused but there was a lot of rain going on outside which was slightly distracting.

Note taking

Today for writing we worked on note taking. We had to note take on how sea turtles grow into adults. The purpose was to get better at note taking so we could get info down fast and easily. Here is a photo of what we did.
I found this hard to do because I had to copy off the White baord and a couple time I fell behind and had to write faster.

Bookipedia reading term two

Today for Bookapedia we were working on skimming and scanning. We got a piece of paper with an article about Japan's new train on it. Suzanne gave us five questions to answer. I answered four correct. 

A good source:

-has a good reputation, be from a trusted expert

-not ask you for private information or have virus warnings

-contain the keywords/information you are looking for

Skill 2:
TITLE: Summarising
WALT: Persist to find information to gain a wider perspective
EVIDENCE: This week for Bookapedia Suzanne gave us the task of creating a fact tree. We had to have a question on the topic of our science inquiry. My question is "how do volcanoes erupt?" Beneath is a photo of my fact tree. 


This week for Bookapedia Suzanne gave us a list of people and she told us that we had choose one and then find out about them then say why we wouldn't want to be that person. I chose Cleopatra. 
Feedback: I like the way you had many reasons for not wanting to be Cleopatra.

Evaluation... I found the skill of summarisimg hard because my question was a type of question where  its hard to write the answer in different parts and its easier to do it in a paragraph.

Play on words

Today for handwriting I practiced the poem we got given for our handwriting test in week one. I finished it with 1 minute and 4 seconds left. I still need to practice accuracy but I am getting better. Here is a photo.

Two little O's and away I go portfolio post

Today while the year sixes went to Japanese the year fives stayed with troy, Scott and Suzanne. We got a worksheet with lots of o's on it and we had to make the o's into lots of different things. Here is a photo of what we did.

This was really fun and easy to do because there are loads of things with O's in them like buses and  beads.


Today with Suzanne we made Tangrams. Tangrams are cool things were you have a shape and you cut along the dotted lines and make shapes. Here are the ones I made.
This was fun but sometimes it was hard to thing things up and make them.

Play on words

Today for handwriting I practiced the play on words poem that we got given for the handwriting test in week one. I timed myself for five minutes and I finished the poem with 54 seconds left. I think I only need to practice accuracy now. Here is a picture.
I found this easy because I wasn't pressured. I just need to practice my accuracy with my small letters.

Fact or fib? Writing

Today for writing in our workshop we got a buddy and we had to come up with two things, one has to be a fib, and the other has to be a fact. My buddy was Edward and my fact and fib were... My cat is as fat as a soccer ball and... My dog is super energetic. The fact was the second and the fib was the first. Then we got a piece of paper and we had to fold it in half. On the outside we had to write a fact or a fib. On the inside we had to write if it was a fact or a fib. Here is mine...
I found making up a fact or fib easy because I had loads of ideas.

Mnemonic creator

Today for spelling I made a Mnemonic. A Mnemonic is something where you have a word and you take the letters and make them into a sentence. E.g. Big Elephants  Can Always  Understand Small Elephants - because. Here is a photo of what I did.
I found it hard to come up with a sentence because I had the word until and words starting with U aren't very common. I don't need to practice my spelling any more because I have nailed all the words I spelt wrong.

I rode a rainbow unicorn.

Today for hand writing I practiced writing a poem in five minutes. I finished the whole thing in the time I had which was good but it was shorter than the one we had to do for our handwriting test. Here is a photo.
I think I need a bit more practice on accuracy.

Word builder

Today for spelling I worked on word builder. I worked on the four words that I got wrong. Until, because I did two L's at the end, Mr and Mrs, because I forgot capitals and it's because I forgot the apostrophe. Here is a photo of what I did.
I don't think I need to practice spelling any more because I spelt them all correct and got all the capitals and apostrophes in the right place.

Beautiful oops portfolio post

Today while the year sixes went to Japanese the year fives stayed with troy and Scott and made "beautiful oopses" . First we read a book called beautiful oops then we got a piece of paper with a beautiful oops on it like a large triangle or a curvy pig tail shape and we had to make them beautiful. Then we got a buddy and they did an oops for us then we made it beautiful. My buddy was Maria.  Here is mine.
Feedback: you were creative by making it into a dog
Feedforward: Next time you could have added more color.
I found making the oops into something beautiful quite hard but then I thought it could be a dog so I made it a dog. I found drawing it easy because I have drawn lots of dogs before.

Today's math challenge

Today in maths I was playing thinking blocks, a game where you have a maths problem and you use blocks to work it out. Here is a challenge I worked on today.
I found this easy because all I had to do was divide 15 by 3 which is 5.

Equivalent fractions

Today in maths I was working on equivalent fractions. Here is an example of equivalent fractions: 1/2 is equivalent to 2/4. Below is a photo an equivalent fraction.

I found this activity easy because James explained it well into the workshop we had with him.

Today's handwriting

Today for handwriting I worked on my goal which was placement of the lower cases. Last week we did a handwriting test and we had to write down a poem from our iPads. There were three priorities: to have ledgable writing, to be fast and to be accurate. I didn't get it done kn the five minutes we had to get it done but I got most of it done. Here is a photo.
I found it hard because I was pressured which was also why I didn't get it all done.

Spelling sample

Today for spelling practice I wrote down the word I had to practice three times and then I put it in three  sentences. Here is a photo of it.
I found this easy because I didn't have to do it with lots of words. I think I did well because I only spelled it wrong once and then crossed out what I did wrong. 

Today's handwriting

Today for handwriting I practiced keeping my lower cases on the lines. I also timed myself for five minutes on the handwriting sample that we did last week and I got more of it done then last time. Here is a photo of what I did.
I didn't get it all done but it was a lot easier because I wasn't pressured. I found it hard not to rush it because I wanted to get all of it done in five minutes.

Today's reading

Today in reading we learnt what was a good website to be on for finding things out. A gold website doesn't have loads of ads on it and it doesn't have inappropriate pictures on it. What it should have is lots of good information on it that isn't false. To find out if it is good you can use skimming and scanning. You can just skim down the page and scan the lines for key words. We got put into groups of four and we had to look up something on google and find a good website with good information. I found this easy because am a fast reader and I am good at skimming and scanning.

Today's writing

Today in writing we had to copy a short piece of writing in our own way. The original was " somewhere behind us a train whistle blew, long and low, like a sad, sad song." Here is my one " somewhere behind us the lion roared, long and loud, like a low, sad song." We also got two different story's and we had to find out what was the same about them and what was different about them.
I found these activities easy because I had already done the second one a few times and they both got explained well.

Converting mixed fractions into improper fractions

Today in maths I learnt how to convert mixed fractions into improper fractions. Here is how to do it... First multiply the whole number by the fractions denominator. Then add that to the numerator. Lastly write the result on top of the denominator. Here is an example.
I found it easy because I have already learnt how to convert improper fractions into mixed fractions so you just do it backwards.

Converting improper fractions into mixed fractions

Today in maths I am learning how to convert improper fractions into mixed fractions. I found that it was actually quite fun. First you have to divide the numerator by the denominator, then you have to write down the whole number, and write down and remainders above the denominator. For example you could do 29/9. So first divide 29 by 9 which is three remainder two. So the answer is three and two nineths. Here is an example.

Remembering that we had to convert it into a mixed fraction not a normal fraction was hard but actually doing it was easy.

Today's math challenge

Today in maths we worked on a fraction challenge. It was a recipe for scroggin which had five ingredients, peanuts, raisins, apricots, banana chips and chocolate chips. Below is a photo of the problem...
I worked this out by first doing the peanuts and raisins because they were the easiest. I got the answer by splitting 200 into 4 equal groups which got me 50. Next I did the chocolate chips. I got the answer by taking one zero off the end of 200 which got me 20. Then, to get the apricots and banana chips I doubled the 20 which got me 40.

Banyan tree art

Description: below is a picture of the art we did last term. We made a banyan tree which is a tree that has roots growing from its branches that dangle down. Banyan trees are usually grown in water. We first made a black silhouette of a banyan tree. Then we made spaces in between the branches and coloured them in with two colours. Then we did them growing in water. After that we did a sunrise background. Here is mine...

Evaluation: The hardest part for me was making the silhouette thick enough. The easy part was the sunrise background. Next time I would choose colours that go better together for in between the branches.
